Who We Are
Professor Robert Slater, BSc, PhD, FIOB Head of School of Life Sciences, University of Hertfordshire
Memberships and Appointments: Fellow of the Institute of Biology
Professor Slater was awarded GlaxoWellcome Professor of Biomolecular Sciences in 1998 in recognition of his contribution to continuing professional development in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. His current research interests are in investigating the regulation of gene expression in collaboration with the transcriptional computation group in Computer Science and with Professor Marc Brown and Professor Mike Parsons on diabetes research. Robert has also published on the use of radioisotopes in biology.
Dr Madhu Goyal, BSc(Hons), MSc(Hons), PhD Senior Lecturer, University of Hertfordshire
Memberships and Appointments: Member of Society of General Microbiology
Dr Goyal has been working in the field of tuberculosis from the approximately the last 15 years and has published papers in this area. Dr Goyal’s research group is working to identify different strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis using different molecular biology techniques and different epidemiological markers. They are also working is in collaboration with VLA to find out the efficacy of improved BCG and study its effect on pathogenesis of tuberculosis by studying the expression of different cytokines. Recently Dr Goyal has started working on a project aimed at the eradication of MRSA.
Dr David Naseby, BSc, PhD Research Group Leader Microbioloby, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
Memberships and Appointments: Society for General Microbiology 1993-present, Society for Applied Microbiology, 1996-present, British Society of Soil Science, 1996-present, British Society of Plant Pathology, 1997-present
Dr Naseby heads the Microbiology, Molecular biology and Biotechnology (MMB) research group which consists of 14 researchers and 5 academic staff. Between 1993 and 1996 he undertook a PhD in environmental biotechnology at Surrey. He continued in this feild as a Senior Postdoctoral Scientist investigating the efficacy and impact of GM microorganisms and plants developed for the control of plant pathogens along with developing environmental biosensors. Dr Naseby currently works at the University of Hertfordshire where he has developed the MMB research group. In recent years, in conjunction with industrial partners, he has applied novel molecular tools to solve problems in pharmaceutical development.
